 Laos is a country where I will cetainly go back because I have the feeling that I didn't spent enough time there and this even if the country is not as large as its neighbors.
The nature lover will first be pleased in Luang Prabang (two days in boat from the thail border). Its peaceful air and its temples will charm you but the most striking place that I will remember is Don Det where you enjoy meeting other tourists who lived there for several years and it is easy to understand why.
Vientiane, the capital offers less interest but before that Vang Vieng will have already pleased you.
I did not have the chance to venture in the north of Laos but according to many people, that is really worth the sorrow!
